About the Airfield
Airfield Bergen, also known as Fliegerhorst Bergen, is one of the best-preserved military airfields from the Second World War in the Netherlands. Built in 1938 by the Dutch air force and captured by the Germans in May 1940, the airfield played a crucial role in Luftwaffe operations over the North Sea.
Today, dozens of original bunkers, trenches and military installations remain intact in the forests and dunes around Bergen. A unique open-air museum that takes young and old back in time.

The airfield is built as a military base for the Aviation Division. The 4th Fighter Aircraft Division with Fokker G.I fighters is stationed here.

At the outbreak of war, the Luftwaffe attacks the airfield. Only one Fokker G.I (no. 321) manages to take off. After the capitulation, the Germans take over the airfield as Fliegerhorst Bergen.

The Germans massively expand the airfield with concrete runways, dozens of bunkers, a Wassermann radar, V-1 launch sites and extensive defences as part of the Atlantic Wall.

The airfield is repeatedly bombed by the Allies. In May 1945, the historic food drops (Operation Manna/Chowhound) take place over the region.

After liberation the airfield is dismantled but the bunkers remain intact. Today the Stichting Bunkerdorp and volunteers manage the site as historical heritage, accessible to visitors through guided tours.
